During the School year, elementary schools in Washington County may bring their students to the Silver Reef Museum in Leeds, Utah, to participate in an on-site program with activities to teach students about the history of Silver Reef and Southern Utah. The program is for fourth graders, but with consent from the Museum, may be adapted to other grades.
Field trips may be scheduled for a Monday or Thursday during the 2016-2017 school year. To schedule a field trip, phone the Museum at 435-879-2254 (the Museum is open 10:00 am - 5:00 pm, on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.) All field trips must be confirmed by the school with the Museum at least 72 hours in advance. Visits may occasionally be scheduled for a Tuesday or a Wednesday, providing volunteer museum staff is available.
The Museum, through a grant from Utah Humanities, will fund transportation for fourth grade classes during the 2016-2017 school year on a first-come, first-served basis until such funds are expended. Schools must obtain Museum approval for funding at the time field trips are scheduled. Schools must arrange for their own transportation and arrive at the Museum by 10:00 am. If students are transported by school bus, the bus must remain with the students for the entire field trip to provide transportation to nearby historical cemeteries and a mine site. No more than 100 students may be scheduled per field trip without approval of the Museum.
Schools must participate as classes, accompanied by class teachers, and an adult for every ten students. They will receive a brief orientation at bus side and then be divided into groups of 10, with an adult in each group to assist with the activities. Approximately ten minutes will be allowed for each activity and groups will rotate to participate in each activity. There will be 8 to 10 activities at the Museum, and time permitting, additional activities at a mine site and two historical cemeteries in Silver Reef. Adults are expected to assist the Museum staff with activities as needed.
Activities will be provided both inside and outside the Museum, so students should dress accordingly. Only bottled water drinks are permitted in the Museum. Students may bring their lunch and eat in the Leeds Town park, which has picnic tables under a covered pavilion, water fountain, and restrooms.
A typical field trip would be as follows:
10:00 am - ------------------------ School bus arrives at the Museum
10:00 am - 12:00 pm ----------- Activities at the Museum, inside and outside
12:00 pm - 12:30 pm ----------- Lunch at the Leeds Town Park
12:30 pm - 1:15 pm ----------- Visit mine and cemetery sites
1:15 pm - ------------------------ School bus departs for the school
The admission fee to the museum for students participating in this activity is $2 per student. There is no admission fee for teachers and adults who are assisting the students.
